Three questions about Pokupsko municipality

“The Award for Pokupsko municipality had a considerable promotional and visibility impact.” Velimir Šegon, North-West Croatia Regional Energy Agency

Pokupsko municipality in Croatia won the 2016 Public Sector EU Sustainable Energy Award.

The municipality has led the way on sustainable energy in Croatia for over a decade — through energy-efficient street lighting, heat pumps in kindergartens and schools, photovoltaic installations and energy retrofitting of municipality buildings. It also has Croatia’s only communal biomass heating plant, which fuels a local district heating system.

Sustainable energy projects in Pokupsko are coordinated on behalf of the municipality by The North-West Croatia Regional Energy Agency — REGEA. Its Deputy Managing Director Velimir Šegon gives an update on progress since Pokupsko won the award.

What was the impact of receiving a Sustainable Energy Award on the project and region?

The Award for Pokupsko municipality had a considerable promotional and visibility impact. This was not only for the municipality, its projects and its citizens but also in general for bioenergy villages and biomass district heating projects in Croatia.

Representatives of a number of other Croatian municipalities visited the Pokupsko bioenergy village to exchange knowledge and experience, and have now started to develop similar projects.

How has the project developed since it received its Award?

Pokupsko municipality is continuing with its sustainable development actions and goals. Among other activities, it is establishing a fully operational biomass logistic and trade centre and enlarging the district heating network.

The biomass district heating plant has now been fully operational for two heating seasons. In the last year several additional customers have been connected. Since the plant is owned and operated by the municipality, the cost of heating is kept low to be attractive to current and potential future customers.

Do you plan to attend EUSEW this year, and if so what do you hope to get out of? Do you have a message for other projects that might be thinking of attending?

Representatives from the North-West Croatia Regional Energy Agency — REGEA — have been attending the EUSEW event for the last eight years and will attend this year’s event too.

Our message for other projects/municipalities is: EUSEW is a great opportunity to learn, share knowledge and establish contacts, don’t miss it!

“EUSEW is a great opportunity to learn, share knowledge and establish contacts.”
