Three questions to Theresa Griffin

Theresa Griffin is an MEP for the North West of England, the Labour Party’s European Spokesperson on energy, and a member of the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE). She represents very innovative cities, such as Liverpool and Manchester, and also regions including Cumbria, Lancashire and Cheshire, which have received EU investment for energy projects.

Why is sustainable energy important for you?

At Sparknews, we consider access to sustainable energy to be one of the greatest 21st century challenges facing humanity.

Sustainable energy provides at least five key benefits: it is clean, renewable and safe. What is more, it creates jobs and provides energy access to a large proportion of the world's population who up until now have not been connected.

For as long as I can remember, climate change and environmental degradation have been framed as a problem to be confronted. It was depressing, then it was boring, and now many of us are just numb to it, even though it impacts upon the lives of millions of people. But lately, I feel we have turned a corner.


A Member of the European Parliament in the ALDE group and Vice Chair of the Industry, Research and Energy committee, Morten Helveg Petersen is founding chair of Energy Solutions, a network of industry representatives and Members of the European Parliament. Participants discuss and develop policy options across positions and parties for meeting the EU 2030 energy and climate goals to realise the European Energy Union. Interoperability is one of the most pressing needs in developing a clean, secure, sustainable energy system for the Energy Union. On 11 May 2017, DG ENERGY and DG CONNECT held a one-day high-level meeting to explore how the Internet of Things can become an Internet of Energy.

As Director General of BEUC, Monique Goyens represents 43 independent national consumer associations from 31 European countries in Brussels. This means having a strong consumer voice at the heart of EU policy-making, ensuring that consumer interests are given weight in policy development and raising the visibility and effectiveness of the consumer movement. This is her second year as an Ambassador for EUSEW.
