Coal regions in transition – investing in renewables

The energy transition is a major economic opportunity for investments, growth and jobs, bringing concrete benefits to all Europeans in the form of cleaner air, local economic development and better quality of jobs. At the same time the Commission made it clear that no region and no citizen should be left behind. That is why a Coal Regions in Transition Initiative was launched under the Clean Energy for All Europeans package to address specific social and economic concerns of regions relying on coal mining as the main source of economic activity and employment.

The discussion panel organised as part of the Sustainable Energy Week will explore the renewable energy potential in coal regions across the EU. It will bring together stakeholders from regional authorities, trade unions and renewable energy experts, as well as representatives from EU Institutions to discuss the renewable energy potential, re-skilling issues, funding opportunities and financing needs in regions with coal mining activities in the EU.
