Professor Edström coordinates the BATTERY 2030+ EU large scale research initiative and the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC) at Uppsala University Sweden. She is a professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Uppsala University since 2005. She is a member of ALISTORE-ERI, the battery network of excellence formed within EU FP6, and she has contributed to a number of EU projects within FP6, FP7 and HORIZON2020. She is a member of the Swedish Electromobility Center with on-going projects with the automotive companies in Sweden.
The main research interests are lithium-ion batteries for all applications including electric vehicles, 3D microbatteries but beyond lithium batteries (sodium-ion, organic batteries, lithium-sulfur, lithium/sodium-oxygen batteries and solid state batteries) are today also important part of her research portfolio. She has a great interest in teaching and guiding young researchers. She is an honorary doctor of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, and received 2018 the Grand Prize from the Swedish Royal Technical University, Sweden. She has h-index 51 (WOS), and she has published more than 240 publications.
