“The vision for Nordic energy co-operation is to develop Nordic energy systems through strong, trust-based, adaptable co-operation in order to secure the world’s most integrated and intelligent low-emission green economy, characterised by security of supply and a high level of competitiveness.” For these reasons, Nordic Energy Research will present knowledge and solutions in accordance with Jorma Ollila’s vision for Nordic energy co-operation: “The level of ambition has to be high. We need to set a goal of developing the smartest energy system in the world and finding the most cost-effective solutions for the green transition.”
The stand will present examples of such ambitious initiatives, including the following:
* A scenario illustrating how the Nordic region, by utilizing new technologies, implement modal shifts in transport, integrate energy sources, establish a shared system for CCUS and use shared electricity networks, is able to become carbon neutral and even carbon negative by 2040. Interactive videos will demonstrate Nordic integrated solutions for the green energy shift.
* A company at Iceland are experimenting on crystallization of CO2 in basalt. The CarbFix project demonstrates that CO2 can be collected from major emission points and CO2 charged waters can be injection of into carefully selected geological formations. The method is of relevance in many parts of the world. A sample will be presented at the stand.
* A feasibility tool for renewable energy supply and storage in sparsely populated areas. This tool was developed for the Faroe Islands, and have gained interest in small communities worldwide. It is a tool kit for initiative takers and planners, with a methodology for how to calculate the total demand, the potential sources of supply of heat and power, the economy of investment and the climate effects from introducing local and renewable energy systems.
* Examples of liquid fuel from biomaterial, with illustration of the value chain from plants, wood or waste, sorted and processed into transport fuels replacing fossil fuels, especially in heavy vehicles and long fright transport.
