This session will present ground-breaking initiatives showcasing various ways to integrate ocean energy in the energy system. Ocean energy technologies make it easier and cheaper to balance the electricity grid. They are necessary to achieve the full decarbonisation of the energy sector and complement perfectly variable RES and storage technologies.
The European energy system will have to decarbonise fully to achieve the Union’s long-term emissions reduction objectives. Being flexible and predictable, ocean energy can make a substantial contribution to this objective. By 2050, the sector plans to deploy 100GW of generating capacity – enough to meet 10% of Europe’s electricity demand.
