SET Plan implementation plans: from a joint vision into investment

The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) is part of the research and innovation (R&I) pillar of the Energy Union and aims to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative low-carbon technologies. It is a major coordination effort between SET Plan countries (EU Member States and Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey), the stakeholders (industry and research communities) and the European Commission.

In 2016, the SET Plan community agreed on ambitious targets for priority low-carbon R&I sectors through a wide participatory process. The SET Plan members have recently endorsed several Implementation Plans identifying R&I actions to achieve those targets.

This session will explore:

  • How various financing instruments, both EU and national, can support the implementation of these plans;
  • If innovators’ financing needs are being sufficiently met by the existing funding framework – also given the ambitious SET Plan targets;
  • If the current innovation ecosystem is conducive of an increase in R&I investments (as needed), or whether it needs to be improved.
